Types of CNC Machining Operations

CNC machining is a manufacturing process suitable for various industries and able to produce a variety of products. The process includes several different computer-controlled machining operations, the below are the most common mechanical CNC machining operations:

CNC Milling: Milling is a machining process that uses rotating multi-point cutting tools to remove excess material from the workpiece. In CNC milling, the machine usually feeds the stock material to the cutting tool in the same direction as the rotation of the cutting tool. Common milling processes include face milling and peripheral milling.

CNC Turning: The turning process employs single-point cutting tools to remove unnecessary material from a rotating workpiece. In CNC turning, the lathe or turning center feeds the cutting tool in a linear motion along the surface of the rotating workpiece, thereby removing material along the circumference until the required specification is reached.

CNC Drilling: In CNC drilling the machine usually feeds the rotating drill bit perpendicular to the plane of the workpiece's surface, which produces vertically aligned holes whose diameter is equal to the diameter of the drill bit used for this operation. However, it is also possible to perform angular drilling operations by using specialized machine configurations and workpiece fixing devices.



Types of CNC Machines

The earliest CNC machines can be traced back to the 1940s, when motors were first used to control the movement of existing tools. With the advancement of technology, through analog computers, and finally through digital computers, this mechanism has been enhanced, which led to the rise of CNC machining.

Today, the vast majority of CNC arsenals are completely electronic. The most commonly used machines in a CNC machining and manufacturing factory include:

CNC Milling Equipment

Milling employes rotating multi-point cutting tools to shape the workpiece. The milling cutter is horizontal or vertical.

The CNC milling process also utilizes CNC-enabled milling machinery called mills, which can be horizontally or vertically oriented. The basic milling machine can perform three-axis motion, while the more advanced models can accommodate more axes.

 

CNC Drilling Equipment
